County Cavan is famed for its abundance of lakes. 365 of them in fact, the river Erne and the Woodford Canal and many many more. The river Erne which runs through the town of Belturbet offers some of the best coarse fishing in Ireland and is very popular with our visitors from the United kingdom and beyond. The Seven Horseshoes Hotel is ideally located to the river bank and is only a two minute stroll away. Fishing tackle and bait can be purchased from Tommy Mc Mahons shop locally . For the angler who wishes to concentrate on Fly Fishing this can be done “between the bridges” in Belturbet, and is within 5 minutes walk from our Hotel. There are many fine game angling river stretches and wild brown trout lake fisheries to choose from locally.
The fisheries in County Cavan comprise of many major river systems and their associated lakes. The River Erne and its main tributaries, the Shannon Erne Waterway and the Dromore and Annalee system dominate the middle of the County. To the east, lies the upper River Boyne system and to the south and north west parts of the Shannon system.
The lakes and rivers around the Belturbet and Cavan town areas have excellent Bream, Roach, Rudd, Perch and Pike. Eels can be found in most waters in the County. Roach, Bream and Rudd Bream Hybrids are also found in the majority of our lakes and rivers.
Tench are now more widespread and have grown to good size in some fishing areas. Carp have also been stocked into specific waters and will soon provide good sport.
There is a water here to suit all tastes. The fisherman or fisherwoman (of course!) looking for big open waters with the promise of Bream, Roach or Pike can choose from the bigger and wider stretches of rivers or large lakes such as Lough Gowna, Sillan, Lough Erne, Oughter, Lough McNean and Lough Ramor which is just outside the town of Virginia.
For anglers in search of somewhat more intimate and secluded waters will find many smaller lakes and river stretches with plenty of fish to choose from.
The stretch of water above, the river Erne which runs through the town can offer you this and is only 2 minutes walk away from our hotel.
